Reactions on Mrs. Micic decision to call elections |
Kostunica party criticises election plans | 21:18 | Beta
BELGRADE -- Wednesday – The Democratic Party of Serbia today strongly criticized the Serbian Government for calling presidential elections. The party, which is led by former Yugoslav president Vojislav Kostunica, accused the government of being in breach of the Constitution and “openly making a laughing stock of voters, the institution of the president and democracy itself”. In a statement, the party claimed the calling of elections showed that the governing coalition “is prepared to do anything to delay, even for a few months, its inevitable showdown with the nation in the only important elections at this moment – elections for the Serbian Parliament”.

Serbia's G17 Plus dismisses presidential election as "not serious"
Belgrade, 17 September: G17 plus will not present its candidate for president of Serbia, spokesperson Ksenija Milivojevic told Tanjug on Wednesday [17 September]. She emphasized that G17 considers that the calling of presidential elections at the time when Serbia is in an institutional and economic crisis, was not serious to say the least. In the assessment of G17 plus, the calling of elections for 18 November represents a manipulation by the ruling DOS [Democratic Opposition in Serbia] coalition in order to draw attention away from the problem of nonfunctioning of institutions in the country, the inefficiency of Serbian parliament and the instability of the Serbian government. G17 considers that the only acceptable solution at this point would be the calling of early legislative elections, Milivojevic underlined, adding that "for us elections do not exist - as if they were not called".

Minister says standing for Serbian presidency "would not be responsible"
[Announcer] A deputy chairman of the Democratic Party [DS], [Serbia-Montenegro Defence Minister] Boris Tadic, has said that it would be irresponsible of him to accept the candidacy for the Serbian presidential election because he, as defence minister, has begun [military] reforms which he would like to complete. Tadic also confirmed that he had discussed his possible candidacy during a session of the Democratic Party presidency during which he explained his position as follows during the session: [Tadic] At this moment, it would not be responsible on my part to accept the candidacy for some other equally important function or position in the state while reforms in the army have already begun as this would, in some way, contribute to the image of politicians as people craving for posts, regardless of what these are. [Announcer] Let us recall that, according to Radio B92's information, Boris Tadic or [Serbia-Montenegro Speaker] Dragoljub Micunovic are the most serious DOS [Democratic Opposition of Serbia, ruling Serbian coalition] candidates for the upcoming presidential election.
