Deal on majority government, in principle
Belgrade, Jan 29, 2004 - Thursday – Serbia’s democratic bloc appears to have reached agreement on the formation of a majority government.

Democratic Party deputy leader Zoran Zivkovic said tonight that the parties of the democratic bloc had agreed to form a majority government and to elect a temporary parliament speaker from the ranks of the Democratic Party of Serbia. The position of speaker will pass to the Democratic Party once a government is in place, he said.

It remains to be seen, however, whether the constituent session of parliament will resume tomorrow as scheduled.

G17 Plus leader Miroljub Labus said participants of today’s meeting, with the exception of the Democratic Party, had signed a government agreement. He said he expected the Democrats to respond tomorrow.

“We've made a fair offer, that's the maximum compromise possible at this moment, in the sense of forming a programme government of all five democratic tickets, at all levels,” Labus told reporters.

But Zivkovic, Serbia’s outgoing prime minister, said his party had asked that tomorrow’s parliament sitting be postponed until a final government agreement is in place.
