NOVI SAD, September 23, 2003 - About fifty employees of Srbobran’s Elan company spent last night in tents and vehicles on the streets of the Vojvodina capital of Novi Sad last night.
The workers slept outside the province’s Executive Council building in protest at the way in which the company’s privatisation has been handled.
Radio B92’s Novi Sad correspondent reports that the protesters are scheduled to meet the privatisation and agriculture ministers today.
They say they have discussed possible solutions to the privatisation of the firm with the deputy chairman of the Vojvodina Executive Council, Mileta Mandic.
The problems have arisen in the implementation of an agreement between Elan and a consortium of businessmen, under which about six million euros is to be invested in the company.
The workers say they don’t know when their meeting with Privatisation Minister Aleksandar Vlahovic and Agriculture Minister Stojan Jeftic is due to begin, but that they will not leave until it has been scheduled.
