G17 Plus welcomes Democratic Party overtures
Belgrade, July 30, 2003 - G17 Plus has welcomed the Democratic Party’s promise to seek opposition support for issues of major importance to the country.

Deputy leader Predrag Markovic said it meant the party had finally accepted the initiative put forward by G17 Plus leader Miroljub Labus at the start of the year.

“We’ve been insisting on this for eight months now. Labus has launched talks on a national consensus and we’ve been discussing this with various parties since January”, said Markovic.

Democratic Party deputy leader Gordana Comic said earlier that the country’s governing coalition would ask for the backing of the opposition, as well as G17 Plus, for the adoption of the Serbian constitution, the strategy on Kosovo and efforts toward European integration.

Her comments mark a break from the backbiting that has soured relations between the government and G17 Plus over the past few months.

Markovic said G17 Plus had proposed ten topics for discussion that “all concern the future of the country”.
