Serbian customs officers discover arms cache in container shipped from USA |
Leskovac, Nov. 16, 2002 - A large quantity of arms was discovered this afternoon during a routine check at the terminal of the Leskovac customs office.
The man who attempted to smuggle the arms in a double-bottomed container was a Yugoslav citizen born in Kupinovo near Leskovac, who has been working in the United States of America, on Long Island, New York State, since 1985.
In the container full of household goods, the Leskovac customs office workers discovered 9 long-barreled rifles and 400 pieces of various types of ammunition. Among the weapons discovered, there was a Winchester pump-action shotgun with a sight, a few unique hunting rifles, and 60
expanding bullets. The total value of arms and ammunition seized is estimated at 25,000 euros.
We have learned, unofficially, that the entire cargo had arrived in our country via Bar
Harbor. According to the unofficial reports, the wife of the man on whom the arms were found and whose identity has not yet been disclosed, in the interest of investigation, is a US citizen working for the US police.
