Timisoara, Feb. 9, 2002 - During its official visit to Romania, the Serbian government delegation stopped off in Timisoara where it met with representatives of the Serb community, gathered around the Serbian Democratic Alliance and representatives of the Serbian eparchy.
The Serbian community from Timis County has 10 preschool facilities, 15 four-year schools and one eight-year school. They are especially proud of the Dositej Obradovic Serbian high school, whose students go on to study at Serbian universities and at Timisoara West University, where a Serbian language Department was opened several years ago.
The Serbian government delegation was introduced to cultural and artistic activities, publishing and literature in the Serbian language. Representatives of Serbs from Romania said that they are in need of textbooks, other books in Serbian, teaching materials, and scholarship funding for further studies and
specializations.
In his talks with Serbian Democratic Alliance President Ognjen Krtsic and Romanian parliament deputy Slavoljub Gvozdenovic, Serbian Minister of Education and Sport Gaso Knezevic said that Serbia will renew its aid. From now on, assistance will be defined through specific protocols and will be delivered systematically, not occasionally and in an ad hoc manner.
"Our goal is a united Europe with no frontiers. That way, it will be easier for Serbs in the
Diaspora to communicate with their mother country. As for culture and religion, which you have managed to preserve in these lands for centuries, they will remain factors that maintain identity. And Serbia will always give you concrete support," said Prime Minister Djindjic, addressing the Timisoara Serbs.
The Belgrade delegation also toured the Serbian church in Timisoara, built in the mid-18th century, which boasts one of the oldest and most beautiful iconostasis. In the Vicary, Bishop Lukijan presented the church's rich collection of paintings and ancient books to the Serbian delegation. He
emphasized the necessity of Serbia's aid to cultural and religious
centers of Serbs in the diaspora.
Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Momcilo Perisic and Ministers Marija Raseta-Vukosavljevic, Gaso Knezevic and Goran Novakovic met with head of the Timis County Horia Ciocarlfe. The meeting covered issues in expanding cooperation between the County and Serbia, and the traditionally good relations between the local and Serb population that have lived in these lands for centuries.
