Paper consumption in the domestic market |
For a continuous view of the balance of newsprint, writing and
printing paper in Serbia, the periods before the disintegration
of the former Yugoslavia, during and after sanctions should
be analyzed.
Paper consumption in SFRJ by the end of the eighties was 56kg
per inhabitant and SFRJ was on the 20th place out of 27 European
countries. During the eighties paper consumption in present
SR Yugoslavia was 37% out of total consumption of SFRJ, that
is 350.000t a year or 35kg per inhabitant.
World paper consumption increased by 2% a year, so the potential
consumption in 1997 in Yugoslavia should have been 400.000 tons.
Crisis on this territory, sanctions of the International community
reduced this amount to 240.000 tons in 1996 and 205.000 tons
in 1997.
There was a change in wood-free uncoated and coated paper consumption
in 1997 comparing to 1996 - consumption of wood-free uncoated
paper increased and of wood-free coated papers decreased. The
reasons for this are various: condition of total economy, its
reduced demands for quality coated papers, that is, substitution
of coated with uncoated papers for commercial materials (booklets,
calendars) and other graphics products.
So our graphics paper consumption is up to 10 times less compared
to some European countries.
From the point of paper weight (grams per m2) Yugoslav consumption
is characteristic for the biggest participation of paper weight:
41-150 g/m2 (table 3).
