Background of paper production
The countries of former Yugoslavia belong to the group of countries where first began world paper production. Hand-made paper production started in 1554, only 20 years after England and France and 2 years after the USA. The first mill for fiber grinding began its work at Radec in 1670 and the first paper machine at Medvode in 1763. Cigarette paper production started at Rijeka in 1827, production of wood pulp, cellulose and paper in Zagreb in 1894 and then at Drvar in 1905. Mr. Bonac organized paperboard production at Kolicevo in 1920 and Mr. Wappa opened paper factories in Belgrade in 1921 and Cacak in 1929.

The following was produced in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1939: paper and board 38.000 t, paperboard 7.000 t, ground-wood pulp 10.000 t and cellulose 25.000 t.

Following table shows capacities and anticipated fiber production in SR Yugoslavia in 2005.
