It encompasses the municipalities of:

It has a population of 217,726. Its seat is in the city of Gnjilane.

The first mention of Gnjilane was found in the fourteenth century.

In its immediate vicinity is the Klokot Spa with several thermal springs supposedly having high medicinal qualities.
