Minimum living cost in Montenegro 601 euro
19:50 PODGORICA , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - The minimum cost of living in Montenegro in January 2004 was 601.76 euro, the Montenegrin Trade Union announced on Tuesday.
The consumer's basket of the Union included 260.27 euro for food, 146.37 euro for accommodation expenses, 70.27 for clothing, 49.74 euro for culture, 41.80 euro for transportation and 33.31 euro for hygiene.
 

Anticorruption council requests clarification on Sartid sale
19:43 BELGRADE , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - Members of the Council for the fight against corruption on Tuesday stated that they had sent to the Higher Trade Court, the Trade Court, the Serbian government and the Ministry of Justice a letter requesting answers to their questions on the bankruptcy procedure and sale of the Sartid company.
Council President Verica Barac specified at a news conference at the Serbian government that some elements of the bankruptcy and the way decisions on the company's sale were made indicate the presence of corruption in the privatization process of the Smederevo steel mill.
 

We shall protect Montenegro against WB and IMF blockade - Krivokapic
19:10 PODGORICA , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - Montenegrin Parliament President Ranko Krivokapic on Tuesday announced that Montenegro will protect the interests of its citizens against a blockade by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund that Serbia is threatened with.
Commenting on the statement made by Serbian Prime Minister designate Vojislav Kostunica that the cooperation with the Hague Tribunal will not be of priority for his government, Krivokapic told reporters that "the priority of Montenegro should always be to protect the interests of its citizens".
 

Montenegrins have to work harder - Djukanovic
18:58 PODGORICA , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - Montenegrin Premier Milo Djukanovic on Tuesday said that one of the main problems of Montenegro is in an insufficient social product and not in its distribution.
"The value we create in Montenegro is not enough to cover all the needs of the population at an expected level. The reason for this is that insufficient work is being done in Montenegro," said Djukanovic during his meeting with trade union representatives.
 

Serbia will pay its political instability with reduced investments - Djelic
18:39 BELGRADE , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - Serbia will pay its political instability with a drop of foreign investments and a reduced privatization of big socially owned companies in 2004, and it is questionable whether we shall receive non-repayable assistance from the European Union worth some 250 million euro, Serbian Finance Minister Bozidar Djelic warned on Tuesday.
Djelic told a news conference that in the initial planning of Serbia's balance of payments, in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund, foreign investments of between 600 and 700 million euro were included in 2004.
 

Donors draw up list of laws important for continuation of reforms
18:14 BELGRADE , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - Foreign donors, gathered in the Group for Transition Laws Committee, have drawn up a list of ten new laws and several amendments to a series of the current laws as the most important legislative changes that are necessary for the continuation of the economic reforms in Serbia, the World Bank office in Serbia and Montenegro announced on Tuesday.
World Bank Country Representative in the SCG Rory O'Sullivan informed all political parties represented in the Serbian Parliament about the legislative priorities and the list of laws classified in three groups, depending on their importance and the phase they are currently in.
 

Drastic drop of wages in Montenegro in January
17:26 PODGORICA , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - The wages in Montenegro in January dropped by 17.9 percent compared to the previous month, the Republican Bureau of Statistics Monstat announced on Tuesday.
The average net January wage was 169.61 euro.
 

Council for Industry requested explanation for dismissal of Geric
17:19 BELGRADE , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - The Council for Industry of the Serbian Assembly decided on Tuesday to request from the relevant Ministry a report on the work of the Serbian Electric Power Company (EPS) in the past period and an explanation of the reasons why EPS Director General Ljubomir Geric was dismissed.
Council for Industry President Veroljub Stevanovic said that a report on the work of EPS was needed, as there were different stories as to how electricity was imported and that our production capacities were not working.
 

Election of Jelasic for governor disputable, Djelic
16:50 BELGRADE , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - The election of Radovan Jelasic for the new governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) will be contestable, as under the Law on the NBS a decision on the appointment of a new government is valid eight days after its publication in the Official Gazette of Serbia, and not according to the decision of the Serbian Assembly that it is effective one day after the vote is taken in the parliament, said on Tuesday Serbian finance Minister Bozidar Djelic.
"What's the rush?...As if there was a pending disaster in the central bank," Djelic asked and assessed that there was no reason to hurry, as the inflation was under control, and the foreign currency reserves at a record high.
 

In Montenegro 30 firms on strike
16:39 PODGORICA , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - In 30 Montenegrin firms strikes are underway, in which are taking part a total of 3,700 workers, said on Tuesday Montenegrin Trade Union Association President Danilo Popovic.
He said that the basic reasons for the work stoppages were delayed back pays, no production, and others. Popovic specified that the largest numbers of firms on strike were in Podgorica - 11, followed by Niksic with four and Berane with three firms on strike.
 

Strikes could develop into civil protests, Popovic
16:23 PODGORICA, Feb 24 (tanjug) - Alliance of Trade Unions of Montenegro President Danilo Popovic cautioned on Tuesday that Montenegrin workers were in a difficult predicament which, if not urgently changed, might lead to civil protests.
He said at a meeting of union representatives with Premier Milo Djukanoivic that the policy of economic reforms pursued so far by the Montenegrin government "has not succeed to out an end to growing social hardships of Montenegro."
 

Djelic denied Geric's statement
16:10 BELGRADE , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - Serbian Finance Minister Bozidar Djelic denied on Tuesday the assertion that the issue of restructuring of the Serbian Electric Power Company (EPS) was mentioned at a government session on Thursday, February 19, as a reason for the dismissal of EPS Director General Ljubomir Geric.
"I can affirm that at no point the issue of disagreement on the concept of restructuring (of EPS) had been mentioned," Djelic emphasized, reacting to Geric's statement that the government had dismissed him for disagreeing with the EPS leadership over the concept of restricting of that public enterprise.
 

Dismissed because I opposed dismantling of Serbian power grid, Geric
16:03 BELGRADE , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - Former director general of the Serbian Electic Power Company (EPS) Ljubomir Geric said on Tuedsay that he was dismissed form the post, because he opposed the concept of disassembling the national power grid that was urged by the Serbian Ministry of Energy.
"That disassembling of EPS is just a precondition for its further destruction as the largest Serbian economic and financial potential," Geric said at a news conference.
 

Embezzlement charge for mine accountant
12:32 BOR , Feb 24 (Beta) - SA former deputy financial manager of the state-owned Bor mining complex has been charged over losses of about a million dollars.
Radojica Lovic is charged with embezzlement and forgery. It is alleged that in 1998 he produced false documents claiming that two foreign companies had met their obligations to the Bor mine.
 

Kolubara mines record second-best daily production ever
12:20 LAZAREVAC , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - Kolubara Mining Complex Technical Director Branislav Kokotovic told Tanjug on Tuesday that the company yesterday produced 105,000 tons of coal, which is the second-highest daily production of lignite in the history of the Kolubara mines.
"We are also very close to the 1988 record daily coal production, just 10,000 tons under. This is extremely good production for our mines in winter conditions," Kokotovic said.
 

Hotel and restaurant managers agree on common approach
12:10 BELGRADE , Feb 24 (Tanjug) - The business association of the hotel and restaurant industry of Serbia HORES has signed an agreement on cooperation with the Belgrade Association of Private Caterers, HORES Director Dragan Barjaktarevic told Tanjug on Tuesday.
The agreement envisages their join approach on the domestic tourism market, Barjaktarevic said.
