Steel workers in conflict with new US management
17:55 SMEDEREVO, Oct 3 (Beta) - The general director of the Sartid steel works in Smederevo, Thomas Kelly, said today that he has rejected workers demands to increase hourly pay rates to 38 dinars (58 eurocents). Kelly responded to a stopwork meeting in the company yesterday by saying that he would not change his offer of increasing hourly rates to 23 dinars (35 eurocents).
The employees are also demanding improvements in conditions for all employees in companies owned by US Steel-Sartid. Union leaders say they will stick to their demands and that the company management is not aware of the seriousness of the situation.
