Coordination of customs will increase deficit
15:13 BELGRADE , Aug 6 (Tanjug) - The customs tariffs proposed by the action plan for harmonizing the Serbian and Montenegrin markets will affect an increase in the trade and budget deficit, prices and unemployment, and will also have a negative impact on the national macroeconomic stability and the competitiveness of the domestic economy, University of Belgrade economics school professor Mladjen Kovacevic said on Wednesday. In a statement for Tanjug, Kovacevic said the Serbian negotiating team should make a greater effort to secure a change in these tariffs by the end of August, so that Serbia could protect its economy on the same principle as Montenegro does, and in particular to develop non-customs protection measures.
Through a series of instruments (subsidies, tax facilities), the state should stimulate the revitalization of production and exports, he said, pointing out the necessity of the functioning of a fund for insuring export deals, a guarantees fund, and the founding of an
agrarian fund. It is also necessary to direct foreign credit lines into priority sectors, he said.
