Tobacco growers' blockade continues
14:28 SABAC, August 5 (Beta) - Tobacco growers from the Macva region of southern Serbia continue to block a bridge over the Sava River near Sabac in protest over payments owed for last year's crop. The growers are using agricultural machinery to block the bridge and demanding that the Agriculture Ministry assist them in recouping the 64 million dinar (around 985,000 euro) debt for last year's crop processed by the Ljubovija-based Duvan Company and the Bajinovac Farming Cooperative.
Tobacco farmers vow to continue their blockade until their demands are met and the debts have been paid. The protest comes just three weeks after a similar bridge blockade, which ended after four days when the Agriculture Ministry pledged to sell processed tobacco from Duvan's reserves to cover the debts.
