Tobacco growers block bridge
19:11 SABAC, August 04 (Beta) - Tobacco growers from the Macva region in south Serbia have blocked a bridge over the Sava river near Sabac in protest over payments owed for last year’s crop. The growers, who have used about twenty tractors to block the bridge, say they want the Agriculture Ministry to assist them in collecting the arrears.
They are claiming unpaid amounts of 44 million dinars (about 680,000 euros) from the Duvan Company and another twenty million dinars from the Bajinovac Farming Cooperative. The protest comes just three weeks after a similar bridge blockade which ended after four days when the Agriculture Ministry pledged to sell processed tobacco from Duvan’s reserves to cover the debts.
