Illiteracy rate down
BELGRADE, July 29, 2003 (Novosti) – Despite a fall in the rate of illiteracy in Serbia, some 700,000 people remain unable to read or write.
Some 82 percent are over the age of 50, almost a 10 percent fall over the last ten years. The illiteracy rate among 30-39-year-olds has dropped from 3.1 to 1.8 percent, and from 9.6 to 2.9 percent among those aged between 40 and 49. Illiteracy is three to four times more common in rural areas. One in 10 women and 1 in 4 Roma in Serbia cannot read or write. Serbia has a population of approximately 10 million.
