Serbia names central bank governor
05:00 Belgrade, July 23 (The Financial Times) - Serbia's parliament appointed a new governor of the central bank yesterday to replace Mladjan Dinkic, who has accused the government of seeking to strip the bank of its independence. The proposal came after parliament on Friday adopted a new central bank law that has sparked a fierce dispute between Mr Dinkic and the government.
MPs picked Kori Udovicki, a Yale-educated economist and former expert on Yugoslavia for the International Monetary Fund, to replace Mr Dinkic. Mrs Udovicki, 41, commands the respect of economic reformers across the former Yugoslav republic's political spectrum. She has pledged to stand by the outgoing governor's inflation-fighting monetary policy.
