Condition of sugar beet
June 02 (IIS, Politika) - Sugar beet was sown on near 95,000 hectares in year 2003. It was estimated that about 400,000 tons of sugar would be produced; 200,000 tons of that would be exported.
But frost and drought reduced expectations. Professor of the Agricultural Faculty in Novi Sad Lazar Kovacev said that, so far, cultivated fields have been reduced to 70,000 hectares. Beet is in good condition only on 25% of remaining fields. Its quality, measured by percentage of sugar in beet would also be reduced.
Only 54,000 hectares (3.3% of Total Vojvodina’s cultivable soil) have been irrigated.
