Rise of 'socially-motivated' suicides in Serbia
16:26 BELGRADE , May 23 (Tanjug) - After the start of the implementation of the so-called social program for the growing number of people who have been laid off from work in Serbia, the number of "socially-motivated" suicides has risen, but the corresponding bodies and the government are ignoring this, the Independent Health Trade Union announced Friday.
"Official data from 2001 are that 1,443 inhabitants of Serbia took their own lives, but the transition process in the meantime has started to have its fearsome effects as officially 950,000 people have lost their jobs, and we believe that the suicide rate is much higher. However, there are no data about this as the corresponding organs are silent," the Union General Secretary Zovorad Mrkic said.
