Balkan states seek extra help to prepare for EU
13:09 BRUSSELS, May 21 (B92) – Serbian PM Zoran Zivkovic, Croatian President Stejpan Mesic and Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski have today made a joint appeal to the EU for an increase of assistance to begin preparations for the Balkan states’ membership of the union.
A letter signed by the three leaders stressed that they were not appealing for more money from Brussels, but rather the establishment of greater cooperation ensuring the more efficient disbursement of the current levels of aid.
According to London’s Financial Times, the three premiers are urging the EU to use the upcoming June summit of the EU in Thessalonica as a forum for switching reconstruction aid to economic development aid.
