EU officials claim: There were irregularities in sugar export
Brussels - EU officials said in Brussels yesterday, that problems about export of sugar from Serbia and Montenegro concerned not only violation of regulations and 'direct cheat' but 'the complete inadequacy of the customs system in Serbia and Montenegro'.
These officials confirmed that authorities in Belgrade had been given a two-month deadline last year to eliminate the problems noticed about export of sugar. According to them European Commission established that almost nothing has been done by the authorities in Belgrade and that 'the system in force in Serbia and Montenegro gives no opportunity to check whether the sugar being exported from that country is really of Serbia and Montenegro origin.
