Sugar beet and sugar production in Vojvodina
In Vojvodina, sugar beets have been sown on more than 95,000 hectares. According to estimates of the Business Association of Industrial Plants, located in Novi Sad, this year production of sugar could reach 500,000 tons. Domestic needs are approximately 200,000 tons which means that 300,000 tons of sugar could be exported and bring €150 million income to Serbia.
Hellenic Sugar, the owner of the sugar factory Sajkaska in Zabalj will invest €2.6 million (€1.5 in new modern technology and the remaining amount in the sowing of beet stimulants and improvements). New equipment which will be imported from Germany will enable the processing of 5,000 tons of sugar beets every 24 hours.
