Sowing of corn
Corn will be sown on 1.3 million hectares this year. Farmers in Serbia usually sow the corn beginning about April 15 and continue until the beginning of May in valleys and finish by the middle of May in the mountains.
More than 18,000 to 20,000 tons seeds are required for corn sowing this year. The Corn Institute of Serbia, located in Zemun Polje, delivered nearly half of the required seeds for domestic needs this year, and exported 2.000 tons of corn seeds to Russia, the Ukraine,
Kazakhstan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Greece, Turkey, Slovenia.
The retail price of 3P corn seeds is 100 dinars/kg (€1.6). Approximately 15kg of seeds are required to plant 1 hectare. Seed costs constitute only 3-5% of total expenses in corn sowing.
