Farms for snail raising in Serbia
Beginning with November 2002 approximately 140 Serbian inhabitants signed contracts with Alimenti Naturali on raising snails in farms.
For a .2 hectare farm the investment requirement is approximately €4,500 and expected incomes in the second business year are near €15,000.
According to the Serbian Institute for Environmental Protection approvals for harvesting of 2,000 tons of snails from nature had been issued in 2001 and it has been estimated that people in Serbia collect a minimum of 4,000 tons of snails per year. Collecting snails naturally has been forbidden in the EU.
Combined total consumption of snail between Europe, Canada, the United States, Japan, and Venezuela equals more than 400,000 tons of snails annually from 1995 to 1998. The French eat more than 50,000 ton of snails per year.
