Sugar export probe underway
Belgrade - Serbian Minister of Trade, Tourism and Services Slobodan Milosavljevic said that the European Union (EU) might impose sanctions on Serbia and prohibit exports until allegations of illegal export of sugar to the EU are cleared up. He said that the state is doing everything in its power to avoid economic sanctions, the Beta news agency reported.
The Serbian government has formed a commission to look into the allegations, comprising representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Management, the Ministry of International Economic Relations, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Services.
Milosavljevic said that an investigation launched by market inspectors on Tuesday will produce a detailed report on the legality of sugar export. The report will show whether Serbia had imported sugar beet for processing and then exported it to the EU as homegrown sugar.
