Information Act to begin its journey through parliament
BELGRADE – Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Zarko Korac has announced the that the draft version of the much needed Information Act will be added to the parliament’s procedural process this week.
Explaining that legal experts and representatives of journalists’ associations have been jointly working on this project for 15 months, Korac said: "Council of Europe and OSCE media experts also participated in the project. The bill was drafted very carefully and we have the CoE representatives' opinion on this latest version, which is very positive. According to their assessment, this bill respects human rights and it can be a good legal framework for the functioning of the media in Serbia".
Korac confirmed that the draft act contains a category pertaining to protected sources in media reporting, explaining that, under the rules of the new act, a source is protected unless the matter at issue involves a crime punishable by more than five years imprisonment.
Korac said that, if adopted, the draft law would finally introduce order to the media scene.
