Russia, Yugoslavia agree on Soviet debt figure of $1.3 bill
BELGRADE - Russia and the states which made up the former Republic of Yugoslavia have jointly agreed the sum of Russia's clearing debt inherited from the Soviet Union at U.S. $1.291 billion, Russian Deputy Finance Minister Sergei Kolotukhin said yesterday.
Kolotukhin negotiated in Belgrade with representatives of Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Macedonia, which are the legal successors of Yugoslavia.
The shares for the former Yugoslav states have already been agreed on in succession negotiations: Serbia-Montenegro will receive 38%, Croatia 23%, Slovenia 16%, Bosnia-Herzegovina 15.5%, and Macedonia 7.5%.
Russia plans to hold bilateral talks with each country to agree the actual amount of debt Russia will pay, Kolotukhin said.
Russia will pay a total of about $700 million, he added.
