Montenegro cedes portfolios to Serbia
PODGORICA – Plans to finalize the new government of Serbia-Montenegro this week are back on track tonight after Montenegro’s ruling Democratic Party of Socialists agreed that Serbia should get the crucial
defense and foreign affairs portfolios.
Under the Constitutional Framework for the new state, one member republic cannot hold both portfolios.
However, say the Montenegrins, the spirit, if not the letter, of the law is more than met by the federal presidency going to Montenegrin Svetozar Marovic who, they say, will represent the southern republic’s foreign affairs policy.
A party spokesman told media that the Democratic Party of Socialists would nominate former Montenegrin Foreign Affairs Minister Branko Lukovac for the federal international economic relations portfolio.
