Sugar export controversy
The Serbian Ministry of Agriculture claims that the EU has not stopped duty free sugar exports to EU countries from the Western Balkans. According to the Ministry there were not any quantity limits, nor any customs charges for these exports. They also claim that it is not true that sugar of foreign origin was exported to to the EU under this program.
Politika daily claims that the European Committee has only delayed the decision on the sugar export support program for this week. According to Politika, OLAF (EU department of fraud investigation) has been investigating the issue during the past few months due to enormously increased levels of sugar exports to the EU from the Western Balkans. The European Foreign Affairs Commissioner, Chris Patten, will come to Belgrade on March 13th to resolve this problem.
