Serbian teachers on general strike as of Monday
BELGRADE – Serbia’s top three teacher unions today announced a general strike for Monday following failed negotiations with the government over wages.
Representatives of the Serbian Education Union, United Teachers’ Union, and the Civil Union of Serbian Teachers “Nezavisnost” called on all members and employees in primary and secondary school to participate in the strike.
Union representatives said that even two and a half months of negotiations with Finance Minister Bozidar Djelic failed to yield even the smallest of demands for a raise in the minimum working wage.
They emphasized that the resources for the demanded raise were firmly within the planned budget for salaries of teachers.
