Serbian parliament debates federal deputies bill
BELGRADE – The Serbian parliament sat this morning to debate legislation on the appointment of deputies to the new parliament of Serbia-Montenegro.
Under the Constitutional Charter for the new state, Serbia should appoint 91 members to the parliament and Montenegro the remaining 35.
Vojislav Kostunica’s Democratic Party of Serbia is opposing a DOS proposal that the seats be filled proportionally to party representation in the Serbian parliament.
Instead, says the party, the distribution should be based on the party power structure in January 2001 when the parliament was formed.
The law on implementation of the charter sets a deadline of February 14 for the appointment of members of the new parliament.
