USAID - 100 Million Dollars for Serbia in Next Five Years
Belgrade - Director of Yugoslav mission of US Agency for International Development, James Stephenson, announced today new donations of that organization to Serbia. The total amount would be some 100 million dollars in next five years for aid to development of democracy and continuation of reforms in the republic.
Stephenson précised that the USAID program of aid to Serbia, entitled ‘Now’, was waiting for approval of the US Congress. He emphasized that a negative outcome of the voting was not expected. Stephenson explained that the US organization planned to finance through ‘Microfinance Bank’ about 1000 programs in local communities and state institutions.
Program ‘Now’ includes help in development of local infrastructure and self-government, civil society, non-governmental organizations and independent media. Stephenson also said that it included the support to reforms of banking sector, support to admission into Word Trade Organization, development of judicial system and fight against corruption. It is the regular practice of USAID to dedicate about 30 million dollars to development of democratic society in transitional countries. Serbia received the biggest share of that money in last two years – about 45 million dollars a year.
