Protesting tobacco growers block highway
PIROT – About 150 tobacco growers from the south Serbian city Pirot and the surrounding area this morning blocked the Nis-Sofia motorway near the village of Veliki Jovanovac.
The growers say they are owed 21 million dinars (about 350,000 euros) by the Pirot tobaccos processor Nisavska Dolina for the 2001 crop.
Police are monitoring the situation as a long line of mostly foreign trucks has formed along the road from the direction of Dimitrovgrad and the Bulgarian border.
The growers say they have mounted the blockade as a last resort.
“No one wanted to hear us and help us, except Mayor Aleksandar Manojlovic,” said a representative of the striking growers.
