Serbian government protests over Kosovo phenol spill
BELGRADE – The Serbian Government has sent a stern protest to UNMIK chief Michael Steiner over a phenol spill from the Obilic power plant into the rivers Sitnica and Ibar.
The spill raised the level of phenol to sixty times the permitted level in some areas and cause a serious ecological threat in Serbia proper.
Residents of the southern Serbian city of Kraljevo have been unable to use the city water supply for four days because of the pollution.
Water has been trucked to the area by tanker from Belgrade.
Belgrade today demanded that Steiner establish how the incident occurred and explain why Serbian authorities were not informed.
The government also demanded that it be permitted to send a team to the Obilic plant to assess the situation.
