Minister negotiates in mine-threatened village
BELGRADE – Residents of the village of Vreoci, under threat from expansion of the nearby Kolubara coal mining complex, last night reached an agreement with Mining and Energy Minister Kori Udovicki to address the town’s problems.
Udovicki agreed to visit the village after locals blocked industrial roads and railway lines for three days.
The outcry came over the expansion of open cuts from the nearby Kolubara coal mines and plans to move the village graveyard, as well as other ecological problems.
Community leader Malisa Markovic told Radio B92 that the meeting had agreed that a study would be conducted in the next sixty days over whether the village would be moved or not.
