Fifty times permitted level of phenol in river
KRALJEVO – Local authorities in the Raska district in southern Serbia are expected to declare a state of emergency today over high levels of phenol in the River Ibar.
District mayor Mile Koricanac said today that the latest analysis showed that the Ibar’s water in Raska had a level of phenol fifty times that permitted.
An analysis of the water supply in the city of Kraljevo last week revealed a level of phenol 2.8 times that permitted, together with twice the maximum level of lead.
Water for drinking and food preparation is being trucked into the city.
Ten tankers arrived from Belgrade in the centre of Kraljevo last night, with another twenty for the surrounding villages, but local authorities say much more is needed.
