Svilanovic denies US military base plans
BELGRADE - Yugoslavia’s foreign minister today denied reports that Washington is seeking long-term military bases in Yugoslavia.
Radio France Internationale yesterday reported that the US Administration was seeking 99-year leases on Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo, the Yugoslav Army radar base on Mt Kopaonik, the Sjenica military airport and navigation facilities on the Pester plateau.
“This information is not true,” said Goran Svilanovic, adding that Bondsteel was already too large for Washington’s current military presence in Kosovo.
“Our own and our future partners’ strategic interests will be defined in the process of our country’s integration into the Partnership for Peace.
“We had all this in mind when deciding to cooperate with NATO,” said the foreign minister.
