Payment operations transferred to banks
BELGRADE – The federal Payment Operations Bureau is to cease operations on January 6, National Bank Governor Mladjan Dinkic told media today.
All companies and organizations using the bureau are required to transfer their accounts to a bank by that date, he said, adding that 20,000 new accounts had been opened in local banks yesterday alone as businesses prepared for the changeover.
The most critical factors in the change, said Dinkic, were companies which had not opened new accounts and banks in which staff were not properly trained in payment operations.
Accounts in the Payment Operations Bureau will not be accessible from January 1, he added.
Although the changeover period had begun on October 1, the National Bank expected a last-minute rush for new accounts, said Dinkic, saying that this was a national characteristic.
He added that the central bank had established a help desk for banks experiencing problems with the new system.
