Explosions in Zemun factory
BELGRADE – Belgrade was rocked last night by a series of explosions overnight within the
Defense Road company in the suburb of Zemun.
Belgrade police have so far only confirmed that explosions at about 1.00 a.m. in Zemun Polje caused the fire.
Gas tanks, various machinery and several vehicles were destroyed in the blaze, said police, adding that there had been major damage to the property but no casualties.
Health inspectors attended the scene and determined that no air pollution had occurred.
Continuing fires and occasional minor explosions, the latest two at about 4.00 p.m. today, in the company’s building have hampered the beginning of the investigation.
Belgrade daily Vecernje novosti quotes unofficial sources as saying that three carloads of masked men armed with automatic weapons were seen leaving the premises shortly before the explosion.
