Kostunica wants new Serbian constitution
BELGRADE – Serbian President Vojislav Kostunica said today that Serbia urgently needs a new constitution to bring about a constituent parliament to better represent the needs and wishes of the nation.
With a constituent parliament and a new constitution, a new round of elections would have to be scheduled. The constituent parliament would not be able to carry on as a regular parliament.
“That is why, maybe, and I say maybe, the most rational solution would be for the current Serbian parliament to come up with a new constitution, based on a broad consensus of parties,” said Kostunica at a conference for the “Centre of liberal-democratic studies”.
Kostunica said that in this way, parliament would not hamstring the revision proceedings, as is the case with the current unsuccessful referendum procedure for constitutional changes.
Kostunica condemned hindrance to the bringing about of a new Serbian constitution by those who do not agree with limiting or dividing the cabinet.
