EBRD says Yugoslavia still leader in transition
BELGRADE - European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) leading economist Willem Buiter said on Thursday, presenting a report on transition in the year 2002 in central and eastern European countries, that Yugoslavia is still the leader in implementing reforms among countries in transition.
The biggest progress in the transition of Yugoslavia's economy and society this year was achieved in banking system reforms, foreign trade, privatization of small and medium-sized companies, and liberalization of prices, but major obstacles still remain for foreign investments in the form of excess administration and incomplete legal regulations, as well as a high foreign-trade deficit, the EBRD said.
