Medical workers on strike
BELGRADE - Medical workers, members of the Nezavisnost union, brought the traffic in Belgrade to a halt today protesting over the failure of negotiations with Health Minister Tomica Milosavljevic on a salary increase.
Following the negotiations held in the Ministry building, the medical workers set off to the Serbian Government.
Union representatives said the protests would continue until the strikers’ demands are met.
Milosavljevic said Serbian health institutions would continue to function “normally” because only 20 thousand of the total of 130 thousand medical workers are members of the Nezavisnost union.
He repeated the Serbian Government’s stance that there are no funds in the budget that could be used to meet this union’s request for a salary increase.
Union members are demanding a seven per cent increase in December salaries and 20 per cent increase for the next year.
