Agricultural production in Serbia down by 3 - 5 percent
BELGRADE - The overall agricultural production in Serbia in 2002 is expected to be down by 3 - 5 percent on 2001, the board of managers of the Association of Communes of Serbia announced on Wednesday.
It was explained that production dropped due to a lengthy drought and the late spring frost which halved the fruit crop causing damages amounting to 150 million euros. This year's wheat crop is beneath several-year averages, and lower harvests are expected for corn - 3.9 percent, sunflower 7.6 percent, potatoes 12 percent, plums by 45 percent and apples 33 percent. This year's grape crop is the same as last year's, while
sugar beet and Soya are expected to be 10.3 and 10.2 percent up.
