Karic puts brave face on Mobtel fire sale
BELGRADE - Serbia’s telecommunications minister announced today that mobile telephone operator Mobtel will be put up for sale.
Tenders will be called by the end of the year, said Marija Raseta-Vukosavljevic, adding that seven or eight telecommunications companies were known to be interested in Mobtel.
Founder and minority shareholder Bogoljub Karic told B92 that he was not surprised by the decision and was happy that the company would be sold.
“We’ve been working on this since the foundation of Mobtel, because enormous resources are required for the development of the company and neither BK Trade nor Serbia’s Postal and Telecommunications authority has those resources,” said Karic.
Karic, who built a pan-European business empire under the patronage of the Milosevic regime, noted that the future of mobile telephony lay in the merger of large companies in order to secure a foundation for third generation telecommunications.
Revenue raised from the sale of Mobtel would be distributed to the Karic family holding company and the Serbian telecommunications authority, said Karic, who declined to name any potential buyers.
