Sustainable diplomacy in South Africa
JOHANNESBURG - Yugoslav leaders are making the most of the World Summit on Sustainable Development to conduct a series of side meetings, with apparently little interest in the main environmental and social issues of the conference.
Federal President Vojislav Kostunica this morning met Romanian President Ion Iliescu to exchange opinions on the situation in the Balkans and make the customary pledges about stability of the region and future cooperation.
Kostunica and the Montenegrin prime minister-designate, Filip Vujanovic, also met the president of the Ministerial Council of Bosnia-Herzegovina to discuss relations between the two countries.
The meting focused on refugee repatriation and the resolution of property issues, together with social security, free trade and the streamlining of bureaucracy at border crossings.
There has been no mention in any of the Yugoslav leaders statements of the environment or the widening global gap between rich and poor – the principal themes of the summit.
