Internet providers are responsible for 'a dramatic drop in international telephone traffic'
Telekom Serbia's coordinator for Internet, Dragan Kovacevic, in his statement for the BLIC claims that certain Internet providers are responsible for "a dramatic drop in international telephone traffic." "Not only did the estimated annual rise of 10% fail, but international telephone traffic will register an annual drop of 16.5 %," Kovacevic said.
The conflict between Telekom Serbia and Association of Internet providers erupted as a result of Telekom's contention that their international traffic monopoly was violated. Internet providers are offering telephoning with the States at the rate of 16.6 dinars per minute, as opposed to Telekom charging 73.6 dinars for the same service. The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications of Serbia ordered Telekom to return dial-up numbers to Internet companies that provide the Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), a new service, which allows customers to make cheaper international calls. So far, Telekom has been ignoring this order.
