Ilic in the race
BELGRADE – The Republic Election Commission today confirmed the candidacy of New Serbia leader and mayor of Cacak, Velimir Ilic, for Serbian presidential elections on September 29.
Commission secretary Liljana Santic said everything was in order with his application.
Ilic becomes the fifth official candidate for next month’s elections. Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica is still collecting the 10,000 signatures necessary to join the race for president.
The deadline expires on September 8.
Ilic, who withdrew his New Serbia party from Serbia’s governing DOS coalition last month, said yesterday that the essence of his platform was a strong economy and that he expected to reach the second round of the election.
