Environment minister in the dark about nuclear fuel
BELGRADE – Serbia’s environment minister, Andjelka Mihajlov, said today that she had not been informed about the transport of nuclear fuel through Belgrade under cover of darkness last night.
The Serbian Ministry of Science today admitted that that the heavy police forces massing in Belgrade last night were guarding the route through which the deadly cargo was trucked from the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Science to Belgrade airport.
The institute, said the ministry, was a potential target for terrorists wanting to obtain dangerous material.
The shipment, which comprised about eighty per cent of the fuel from a reactor which was decommissioned in 1984, was flown to Russia this morning.
Meanwhile, Environment Minister Mihajlov said that she had learned about the shipment from the media and had no idea what the cargo actually was. (Beta/Srna)
