City Hall buckles under cabbie protest
BELGRADE, Tuesday – Streets full of stationary taxis and the resultant traffic pile-ups throughout the city brought the Belgrade City Assembly to its knees today.
At a meeting with representatives of fourteen taxi cooperatives, the city agreed to crack down on illegal taxi drivers and introduce special
license plates for drivers with regular licenses.
After winning at City Hall, the thousands of protesting cabbies moved across the road to present a list of demands to the Serbian Finance Ministry.
The drivers warned that unless Finance Minister Bozidar Djelic also gives in to their demands, their will be a nationwide strike and road blockade on June 10.
