Conference of Danube countries on May 27th in Vienna
It is the initiative of the Stability Pact for Cooperation in Southeastern Europe, Erhard Busek, to create a closer link between Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Germany, Hungary, Moldavia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Serbia and Montenegro. The aim is cooperation in order of achieving economic development, enabling unobstructed navigation on the Danube, environment protection, managing water resources and contribution to the development of tourism.
At the meeting in Vienna on May 27th, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia and Serbia and Montenegro will try to reach an agreement on developing the international navigation route on the river Sava. A special team is already working on the draft agreement. The program of developing infrastructure, which will also be discussed, so far foresees only the construction of a new bridge on the Danube linking Romania and Bulgaria, and the reconstruction of the Bulgarian port of Lom, on the Danube, so it could cope with the expected increase of trade. In order for the Danube to become a link between Central Europe and the Black sea again, it is first necessary to remove the remains of the destroyed bridges in Novi Sad and regulate the river. These projects are expected to be completed by the end of this summer. (SENSE)
