Convertibility no threat to strength of dinar, says Dinkic
BELGRADE, Monday – There is no danger that the convertibility of the Yugoslav dinar would lead to a weakening of the currency, said National Bank governor Mladjan Dinkic today.
“There will be cash dinars abroad, but no matter how much money leaves the country, the important thing is for us to have full control over the volume of dinars issued,” said Dinkic.
The International Monetary Fund last week declared the dinar fully convertible for all current account and some capital account payments.
It is the first time the dinar has met convertibility conditions since 1946, when Yugoslavia became a founding member of the IMF.
Dinkic welcomed a move today by Diners Club International to allow its Yugoslav card holders to service payments in dinars. (Reuters)
